Probiotics are good bacteria that occur naturally in our intestines. Defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as live microorganisms that boost health, when taken in adequate amounts, probiotics are beneficial for our gut microbiome and overall well-being. Common probiotic strains include lactobacilli, bifidobacterial and lactococci, which also occur in fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut. Unlike fermented products, probiotic supplements contain carefully selected bacteria studied for their specific benefits on anything from sleep to digestion and immunity.
Good bacteria in the gut
Each adult hosts between 1.5 to 2 kg of bacteria, primarily residing in the gut and collectively known as the gut microbiota. These 100,000 billion bacteria play a vital role in our metabolism and are essential for supporting our immune system. When factors such as illness, stress, or use of medication disrupt the balance of our gut microbiota, probiotics step in to help restore harmony and alleviate or reduce symptoms.
Probiotic varieties
There are many probiotics brands today, all offering different kinds of probiotics. Most make probiotic food supplements that generally contain one or two different stroins of bacteria. However, even if they share the same name, each strain has different, distinct properties. Moreover, no single strain can do it all. That’s why it’s best to combine different probiotic bacteria with diverse properties –– known as a multispecies probiotic –– for optimal effectiveness.
For the best possible support of the gut microbiota, we create products containing diverse probiotic bacteria, known as multispecies probiotics. Additionally, since health issues vary in their causes and solutions, we offer products with probiotic bacteria specifically chosen to address specific conditions. These targeted probiotics are referred to as ‘indication-specific.’
